What is a Podiatrist?

A Podiatrist is a trained and licensed specialist who will diagnose the problem and treatment needed of foot and ankle issues  such as bunions, heel pain, spurs, plantar fasciitis, neuromas, hammertoes, ingrown toenails, warts, corns and calluses. They provide medical and surgical care to people with foot, ankle and lower-leg problems, diagnosing illness, treating injuries and performing surgeries. After a diagnosis has been provided, the podiatrist will refer or consult with a Pedorthist to create the needed orthotics.

What is a Pedorthist?

A Pedorthist is a trained and licensed footwear and shoe specialist. They are trained and certified health care professionals who specialize in the manufacturing, designing and fitting of foot orthotics and footwear such as shoes, sandals and custom made shoes that are worn to treat problems in the lower limbs, feet and ankles. Pedorthists will often work along with podiatrists, who provide medical and surgical care to people with foot, ankle and lower-leg problems, diagnosing illness, treating injuries and performing surgeries.

Why Might Would You Need Both?

A Podiatrist should be consulted for any medical treatment for your lower extremities. A Pedorthist specialist should be brought in if the solution involves custom orthotics and footwear. The technical expertise of a Pedorthist in conjunction with advice of your doctor will provide the best results for your feet health care.
